Natural Medicine Management of Gallstones: Nearly a million gallbladder surgeries are done in this country every year. I would say 99% are unnecessary. When a stone gets lodged in one of the small bile ducts, severe pain is created and emergency surgery may be needed. This is only true in a minority (1%) of surgical cases. Instead, the prevailing wisdom is-a patient has attacks of gall bladder pain, the doctor sees the stones on ultrasound, and surgery is scheduled. Furthermore, a New England Journal of Medicine article concluded that the “risk of routine surgery for non-painful gallstones is greater than the later risk of a blocked duct and emergency surgery,” and advised doctors to let “sleeping gallbladders lie,” advise which they most assuredly do not follow. Generally, absolutely no effort is placed on looking for the cause of the problem. Natural medicine doctors know that most gallbladder attacks come from eating foods to which the patient is allergic. The most common culprits are egg, onions, and pork, but any food could be a problem. Blood tests will expose the suspects. Despite what the surgeon may tell you, the gallbladder is an important organ. The bile which it stores is crucial for a smooth digestion, especially for fats and oils. Most patients who have this surgery will develop a certain amount of indigestion at some time afterwards. Such symptoms can often be relieved by the addition of bile salt and pancreatic digestive enzyme containing supplements. Few people are aware that the stones that sometimes collect in the gallbladder are actually produced in the liver, and that organ must be attended to as well. Also, you can have a dysfunctional gallbladder without showing stones on your ultrasound. At Caring Medical, in our opinion, we have a highly successful protocol which softens and then promotes the gentle passing of gallstones, and prevents future problems. We advise patients to not attempt this themselves, but under the supervision of a knowledgeable physician. We also always look for the food allergies to reduce the number of “attacks” the patient experiences. Phosphatidyl choline, enzymes, beet extracts, epson salts, garlic and olive oil are all used to good effect. Just because they can now do this surgery laparoscopically does not make it a good idea. Keep your gallbladder, stay away from the surgeon, and see a natural medicine physician who knows how to manage food allergies and uses non-invasive gall bladder treatments. |
