Five things you should know if you take cholesterol lowering medication! Robert Filice,M.D. 1. Many of the cholesterol drugs cause muscle pains, and can cause some liver toxicity. You already know how expensive they are. - 2. Much of the hype about cholesterol is based on studies sponsored by the drug companies themselves, and their marketing departments. There is still doubt in reasonable scientists’ minds about whether lowering cholesterol by artificial means reduces heart disease deaths. It does, however, make lots of money for the drug companies and gives traditional physicians the (false) idea that they are doing something useful for the patient. There are many studies that suggest cholesterol is a minor risk factor, or perhaps even just an “innocent bystander” in the cardiovascular system health drama. - 3. Cholesterol goes up when metabolism has shifted from aerobic (uses oxygen) to anaerobic (produces energy inefficiently without oxygen). When acetyl Co-A accumulates because of inefficiency in the Krebs cycle (the aerobic metabolic pathway), more cholesterol and less energy is produced from that substrate. Furthermore, inadequate aerobic metabolism also interferes with the enzymes that produce hormones from cholesterol. Thus greater internal production and less utilization of cholesterol combine to cause elevated blood cholesterol levels. - 4. Elevated cholesterol is therefore a marker for a metabolism that has gone from aerobic to anaerobic, is often associated with another signs of anaerobic metabolism (cravings for sweets and carbohydrate foods, for example), and is usually associated with hormone deficiencies that aggravate the problem even further. - 5. The two most important treatments for elevated cholesterol are the most natural: First, get your system switched back to aerobic metabolism by regular aerobic exercise, and second, get hormone levels (especially testosterone and Thyroid) checked since replacement of deficiency will help restore general health while it naturally brings down elevated cholesterol. |
