Fibromyalgia and Hormones
Last fall I saw a 37 year old woman who had developed a severe case of fibromyalgia within one year of a total hysterectomy in 2001. She also had a problem with insomnia and heavy stress. She was given an estrogen patch immediately after the surgery by her gynecologist, but developed body pains the following year.

What's interesting in this case is the clear cut connection of the fibromyalgia with the abrupt hormone changes occurring after the surgery, and the fact that traditional estrogen-only hormone replacement therapy did not prevent the problem.

Within 3 months of having her salivary hormone testing and starting on bio-identical hormone replacement creams, all of her fibromyalgia symptoms disappeared, despite persistence of some level of insomnia.

Basically it appeared that the patch was not raising her estrogen level high enough, and also despite the fact that she no longer had a uterus, she badly needed progesterone therapy to balance out the estrogen. The gynecologist had not done this. When it was done, her serious fibromyalgia symptoms cleared completely.

We commonly find hormone imbalances in fibromyalgia patients. It isn't always 100% of the problem, like it was in this case, but it's usually very important. If you're not well, have your hormones checked by a knowledgeable natural medicine practitioner.
